In 2019 Ed Colfer, then the coach of Bodine High School in Philadelphia, had an idea to play boys and girls tennis versus Bensalem High School, where he had completed his student teaching. Ed was familiar with Bensalem coach Chris Sterman & reached out to him and Bensalem Athletic Director Jeff Per, who agreed it would be a super idea. Ever since the kids have had so much fun playing each other each season.
About 3 years ago Marty Moyers took over as the coach at Bodine and continued the tradition. He has done a great job with the tennis program at Bodine. It is not easy forming tennis teams and getting tennis players at inner city schools. It was Marty's idea to play at DVTC this season. September 4 began as a chilly fall day but as the afternoon progressed it became warmer, setting the stage for great tennis weather! Some of the kids have never played on har-tru or clay and they loved the opportunity and experience!
It is truly an honor for the club to provide this opportunity. The players and their families who attended were exposed to a great playing venue and wonderful spectator experience while DVTC was able to expose them to our club and its amenities!
Thanks to Coach & DVTC member Marty Moyers, Pro Eddie Colfer, Jr., Board President George Petrakis, and Board members Marc Cohen & Ed Colfer, Sr. for making this happen! We also thank the club members who came out to watch & cheer for these young players!
We hope to keep up this great event in the future and invite more teams to experience a match on the beautiful DVTC courts!.
